The Ongar Club is frequented by high grades, Black Belt 1st Dan and above, as we have plenty of mat space and room to carry out Kata and weapons training. The club also has a number of Kyu (coloured belt) members who benefit greatly from the number of Black Belts who train regularly. A usual training session at Ongar Jikishin Ju Jitsu Club is usually quite informal, and high grades make decisions on what they wish to do.
The class may be broken down into number of sections, which include:
Warm-Up
Approximately 15 minutes. Optional for high grades, the warm-up may be dispensed with depending on the composition of the class. During the warm-up. the class will complete a variety of exercises, including but not restricted to;
| Aerobic Exercise | jumping, running, squat jumps, squat thrusts, upper body exercises |
| Strength Exercises | sit-ups, push-ups, resistance training, dips |
| Speed Practice | strikes, kicks, blocks, feints, dodging and slipping strikes |
| Stretching | legs, arms, torso, neck and spine |
| Breakfalls | practising the safest ways to fall, and be thrown |
Techniques
Approximately fifteen minutes. Optional. This section is dedicated to Street Self Defence – the hard end of Ju Jitsu. The techniques here are based around the syllabus, and are designed to get the student out of trouble quickly, and with the minimum damage to themselves. The underlying tenet is “The best form of self-defence is escape”.
Syllabus work
Approximately half an hour. Here you will learn all of the techniques needed to move up the ranks and eventually receive the coveted Black Belt. The syllabus is designed to build skills and reflexes, and to equip the student with all the skills necessary to successfully defend themselves. Details of the syllabus can be found on the main Jikishin Website.
Game
At the end of training we reward those juniors who have worked hard and behaved themselves with a game - this might be a game of Bulldog or Dodge-ball. The games are designed to compliment and enhance Ju Jitsu skills.
There is also time for competition training in Sparring, Groundwork and Kata.
