Ongar Jikishin Ju Jitsu Club has been established since 1979 and is a mature club, which has produced many Dan Grades over the years. Many of the Dan Grades, right up to 4th Dan, continue to train regularly at the club. The dojo (training place) is based in large gymnasium, giving lots of room for the Ju Jitsu mat area, and a large off mat area where Ko-Budo (Weapons) and Empty Hand Kata are practiced. There is also room for sparring. The Dojo is well equipped with a 6' kick bag, a hook and jab bag, and focus pads, kick shields and weapons available for students to train with.

Sparring and Groundwork skills are practiced for competition..

Earl Walker, 4th Dan and Senior Coach, is the club instructor and is ably assisted by his wife Jackie 2nd Dan, Will Murley 2nd Dan and Level 2 Coach.  Earl has a positive and well thought out attitude to Ju Jitsu, and runs Women's Self Defence Courses in Essex and East London.

Earl Walker has very strong feelings as to how Ju Jitsu should be taught and what the student should get from a training session.

"Ju Jitsu training is about learning Self Defence, and once the defensive skills are taught, about self control. A student who learns how to inflict pain and serious injury upon an opponent should always be the last to resort to violence. Because of the skills learned the Ju Jitsuka has no need to use the techniques acquired, unless physically attacked. I believe that once the student has a good enough grounding in the basics, the self confidence shows through and most attackers will pass them by looking for a an easier target. I can think of few cases where an attacker would be looking for a self confident victim."

"In my Ju Jitsu and mixed martial arts clubs I try to build a relationship with each student, and to help them along the road to learning the syllabus. I try to make the classes enjoyable and fun, but with the serious side always stressed. Not just self-defence techniques are taught but also how to avoid trouble, and how to deal with it without resorting to violence. The classes usually breakdown as follows; the first half-hour is free time enabling the student to practice with a partner or to talk over the way a technique is applied. The next half-hour is the warm up - this is the part where I try to get, and keep, my students fit. A variety of aerobic exercises, strength exercises, stretching and breakfall practice is the norm, with various other games, contests and partnership exercises thrown in for good measure. This is usually followed by a three-minute rest period to grab a drink and towel off before we practice a few self-defence techniques and scenarios. The rest of the lesson is taken up with Syllabus practice allowing the students to practice the techniques that will allow them to move toward the next grade."
